Blessings . . . April 12, 2014

Yesterday I took my wife Alicia to the surgeon’s office for her two-week checkup after having her hip replaced.

 My reason for writing is not to discuss her surgery, but to share an experience we had on leaving the office. Alicia has gotten into the habit upon leaving someone or ending a telephone conversation of saying … as she did yesterday upon concluding her business with Hampton, the check-out clerk in the orthopedic office … instead of saying “goodbye,” she says “blessings on your day!”

Well, there was a lady immediately behind us coming out the door, who quickly commented on how beautiful the thought it is to share … and would Alicia please bestow it upon her before we parted ways – of course, her wish was promptly granted.

 We had never seen the woman before and may well never see her again, we did not even exchange names … but she trotted off feeling a brighter spirit in her heart than she did minutes earlier.

“Blessings on your day!” It a grand statement without being confrontational, as it’s not challenging in any way and not making any demands of the receiver … you are, as this old hymn says, showering a blessing upon the person, to be taken in and uplifted by and brushed off, however the person chooses.

 There shall be showers of blessing:
This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Savior above.

There shall be showers of blessing;
Send them upon us, O Lord;
Grant to us now a refreshing,
Come, and now honor Thy Word.

There shall be showers of blessing,
If we but trust and obey;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
If we let God have His way.

Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy-drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.

Daniel W. Whittle wrote those words more than 130 years ago … may they deliver a blessing on your day!
